The winter months can be a wonderful time to stay warm and cozy indoors and spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately, for many, November - February can also be expensive months for utility costs. Keeping this top of mind and making a few adjustments in your home or apartment this winter can help tremendously reduce how much you spend on energy.

Here are a few tips from that can help you stay warm and comfy while reducing your energy consumption.

  1. Bundle up! One of the easiest ways to stay warm and keep your electric bill down. This is the perfect time to slip-on all those fuzzy socks and big sweaters you've been waiting all year to wear.
  2. Adjust your thermostat - Turn your thermostat down 10-15 degrees for up to eight hours. Big comforters, flannel and silk sheets are perfect to use this time of year.
  3. Get a humidifier - The moister the air, the warmer it will feel. Especially when you're turning down the temperature at night.
  4. LED, LED, LED - Love to decorate your home with holiday lights, but hate the bill? LED lights are the perfect substitute for those costly holiday lights. They use considerably less energy and last up to 25x times longer!
  5. Insulate - One of the simplest things you can do to reduce your energy bill year-round, is keep your home insulated. Weather stripping, foam seals for any cracks and sealing windows is a low-cost way to keep the warmth in and reduce your energy bill.
