Spring is here, which means it’s time for a little spring-cleaning around the house. As the temperatures begin to rise, make sure your energy bills don’t. Here are some tips to save money and apply a little “spring cleaning” to your energy costs.
Save Money Room by Room
As you do your spring-cleaning sweep in each room of your home, consider these energy-saving tips that will put money back in your pocket!
-A leak of 1 drip per second can cost $35 a year! If you’ve been ignoring your leaky faucet, now is the time to take care of it.
-Make the most of your dishwasher. Only wash full loads, turn off the heat-dry mode and consider investing in a newer model that uses less water to save energy costs throughout the year.
Living Rooms and Bedrooms
-How many electronics do you have plugged into power strips? “Dormant” power consumption can equate to about 10% of your total energy use. Consider purchasing a smart power strip. Rather than unplugging your electronics, this power strip detects energy use and cuts power to interconnected devices (like a television and gaming system) when you’re done using them.
-Get your AC professionally serviced before the heat of summer is upon you, and replace your air filters. Dirty filters slow down the flow of air, which increases your energy expenditures.
-If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, spring is the time to get that taken care of. Properly utilizing a programmable thermostat can save you nearly $200 a year.
-Purchase a low-flow shower head with a flow rate of less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This will reduce your hot water use, and result in water savings of up to 60%.
-What type of vanity lighting are you using? Energy efficient LED light bulbs use about 80% less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb, and can save you up to $125 over the life of the bulb. That’s just one bulb. Multiply that by the total number of bulbs in your home, and that’s some serious savings.
-It’s time to make your laundry work for you! Energy Star certified washers use about 25% less energy than a standard washer, and can save you up to $45 a year on energy costs. They also use 45% less water, so your water bill will go down, too. Wash your clothing in cold water and reap even more savings. While you’re selecting your new washer, get an Energy Star certified dryer. Smart sensors turn the dryer off when your clothes are dry. Use a low-heat setting for a longer cycle to conserve more energy. This dryer will save you about $200 in energy bills over its lifetime.
How Does Your Garden Grow?
While you’re doing your spring gardening, making strategic choices can save you money all year long.
-Planting deciduous trees on the south side of your home will provide shade from the summer heat, while still allowing the sun to heat your home during the winter.
-Windbreaks lower the wind chill to your home and reduce your winter heating costs. Choose trees or shrubs with low crowns that will block wind close to the ground. Plant your trees at a distance from your house of two to five times the mature height of the tree.
-Think about watering needs before you purchase your plants. Consider buying plants that won’t need a lot of water. Usually this means choosing plants native to your area. Water plants in the morning to avoid evaporation losses.
